1. What Information Do We Collect?

Personal information you provide, information collected automatically, and information from other sources.

1.1 Personal Information You Disclose to Us

We collect personal information that you voluntarily provide to us when you register on the Services, express an interest in obtaining information about us or our products, participate in activities on the Services, or otherwise contact us.

The personal information we collect may include:

  • Names
  • Phone numbers
  • Email addresses
  • Academic institution admission number (if your institution uses our enterprise suite)

We do not process sensitive information, such as racial or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, or religious beliefs.

Payment Data. We may collect data necessary to process your payment if you choose to make purchases, such as your payment instrument number and its associated security code. All payment data is handled and stored by Paystack.

Social Media Login Data. We may let you register using your existing social media account details, such as Facebook or X. If you choose to register this way, we collect certain profile information from that provider — see "How Do We Handle Your Social Logins?" below.

Application Data. If you use our application(s), we may also collect, with your permission:

  • Mobile Device Access — your device's camera, microphone, image picker, and media library, to power relevant features. You can change these permissions in your device settings at any time.
  • Mobile Device Data — device ID, model, manufacturer, operating system, browser type and version, hardware model, internet service provider or mobile carrier, and IP address.
  • Push Notifications — about your account or app features; you can opt out in your device settings.

All personal information you provide to us must be true, complete, and accurate, and you must notify us of any changes.

1.2 Information Automatically Collected

We automatically collect certain information when you visit, use, or navigate the Services. This information doesn't reveal your specific identity but may include your IP address, browser and device characteristics, operating system, language preferences, referring URLs, device name, country, location, and information about how and when you use the Services. We use this primarily to maintain the security and operation of our Services and for internal analytics and reporting.

This includes:

  • Log and Usage Data — service-related, diagnostic, usage, and performance information our servers automatically collect, including your IP address, device information, browser type, activity in the Services (timestamps, pages viewed, searches, features used), and device event information (system activity, error reports, hardware settings).
  • Device Data — information about the computer, phone, or tablet you use to access the Services, including IP address, device and application identification numbers, location, browser type, hardware model, internet service provider or mobile carrier, operating system, and system configuration information.

Google API. Our use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

1.3 Information Collected From Other Sources

We may collect limited data about you from public databases, marketing partners, social media platforms, and other outside sources, to enhance our ability to provide relevant marketing, offers, and services, and to keep our records up to date. This may include mailing addresses, job titles, email addresses, phone numbers, intent data, IP addresses, and social media profiles, URLs, and custom profiles, used for targeted advertising and event promotion.

If you interact with us on a social media platform using your social media account (for example, Facebook or X), we receive personal information about you from that platform, such as your name, email address, and gender. You may have the right to withdraw your consent to this processing — see "Withdrawing Your Consent" under "What Are Your Privacy Rights?" below. What we receive depends on your social media account's privacy settings; the platform's own use of your information isn't governed by this Privacy Notice.

2. How Do We Process Your Information?

Running and improving the Services, communicating with you, security, legal compliance, and other purposes with your consent.

We process your personal information for a variety of reasons, depending on how you interact with our Services, including to:

  • Facilitate account creation and authentication and otherwise manage user accounts.
  • Deliver and facilitate delivery of services to you.
  • Respond to your inquiries and offer support.
  • Send administrative information, such as details about our products and services and changes to our terms and policies.
  • Fulfill and manage your orders, payments, returns, and exchanges.
  • Enable user-to-user communications, where you choose to use features that allow this.
  • Request feedback and contact you about your use of our Services.
  • Send marketing and promotional communications, in line with your preferences — you can opt out at any time; see "What Are Your Privacy Rights?" below.
  • Post testimonials that may contain personal information.
  • Protect our Services, including fraud monitoring and prevention.
  • Administer prize draws and competitions.
  • Evaluate and improve our Services, products, marketing, and your experience, and identify usage trends.
  • Comply with our legal obligations, respond to legal requests, and exercise, establish, or defend our legal rights.
  • Analyze academic performance records to identify performance trends, make recommendations, and provide accountability channels and support.

3. When and With Whom Do We Share Your Personal Information?

Business transfers, affiliates, business partners, other users, and third-party offer walls.

We may need to share your personal information in the following situations:

  • Business Transfers. In connection with, or during negotiations of, any merger, sale of company assets, financing, or acquisition of all or part of our business by another company.
  • Affiliates. With our affiliates — our parent company and any subsidiaries, joint venture partners, or companies under common control with us — who are required to honor this Privacy Notice.
  • Business Partners. To offer you certain products, services, or promotions.
  • Other Users. Information you share publicly (for example, by posting comments or content) may be viewed by all users and made publicly available outside the Services. If you register through a social network like Facebook, your contacts there may see your name, profile photo, and activity descriptions.
  • Offer Wall. Our application(s) may display a third-party "offer wall," through which advertisers offer virtual currency, gifts, or other items in exchange for completing an advertisement offer. Clicking an offer takes you to an external website; a unique identifier such as your user ID is shared with the offer wall provider to prevent fraud and credit your account.

4. Do We Offer Artificial Intelligence-Based Products?

AI-powered features, the third-party AI providers we use, and how your data is handled.

4.1 Use of AI Technologies

As part of our Services, we offer products, features, or tools powered by artificial intelligence, machine learning, or similar technologies ("AI Products"), designed to enhance your experience. This Privacy Notice governs your use of the AI Products within our Services.

We provide the AI Products through third-party service providers ("AI Service Providers"), including OpenAI and DALL-E. Your input, output, and personal information will be shared with and processed by these AI Service Providers to enable your use of our AI Products, for the purposes described in "When and With Whom Do We Share Your Personal Information?" above. You must not use the AI Products in any way that violates the terms or policies of any AI Service Provider.

4.2 Our AI Products

Our AI Products are designed for functions including:

  • AI bots
  • AI document generation
  • AI insights
  • Image generation
  • Natural language processing
  • AI applications

4.3 How We Process Your Data Using AI

All personal information processed using our AI Products is handled in line with this Privacy Notice and our agreements with third parties, to keep your information secure throughout the process.

5. How Do We Handle Your Social Logins?

What we receive when you register or log in using a social media account.

Our Services let you register and log in using your third-party social media account details, such as Facebook or X. Where you choose to do this, we receive certain profile information from your social media provider — this often includes your name, email address, friends list, and profile picture, as well as anything else you've made public on that platform.

We use this information only for the purposes described in this Privacy Notice or otherwise made clear to you. We don't control, and aren't responsible for, how your social media provider otherwise uses your personal information — we recommend reviewing their privacy notice to understand how they collect, use, and share it, and how to set your privacy preferences on their platform.

6. How Long Do We Keep Your Information?

We retain information only as long as needed, and no longer than three months after account termination.

We keep your personal information only for as long as necessary for the purposes set out in this Privacy Notice, unless a longer period is required or permitted by law (such as tax, accounting, or other legal requirements). No purpose in this notice requires us to keep your personal information for longer than three (3) months past the termination of your account.

When we have no ongoing legitimate business need to process your personal information, we delete or anonymize it. Where that isn't possible — for example, because it's stored in backup archives — we securely store it and isolate it from further processing until deletion is possible.

7. How Do We Keep Your Information Safe?

Technical and organizational safeguards, and the limits of any online system.

We've implemented appropriate technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the personal information we process. However, no transmission over the internet or storage technology can be guaranteed 100% secure, so we can't promise that hackers, cybercriminals, or other unauthorized parties will never defeat our security. Transmission of personal information to and from our Services is at your own risk — you should only access the Services within a secure environment.

8. What Are Your Privacy Rights?

Withdrawing consent, opting out of marketing, and managing or deleting your account.

8.1 Withdrawing Your Consent

Where we rely on your consent (express or implied, depending on applicable law) to process your personal information, you have the right to withdraw it at any time by contacting us using the details in "How Can You Contact Us About This Notice?" below. Withdrawing consent won't affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before the withdrawal, or processing based on grounds other than consent.

8.2 Opting Out of Marketing Communications

You can unsubscribe from our marketing and promotional communications at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in our emails, or by contacting us using the details in "How Can You Contact Us About This Notice?" below. You'll then be removed from marketing lists, though we may still send you necessary service-related messages, such as responses to service requests.

8.3 Account Information

To review, change, or terminate your account, log in, navigate to the profile tab, tap Account, and use the delete account option. If Lightbulb is actively linked to your academic institution, contact your institution's student registry to delete your account.

When you terminate your account, we deactivate or delete it and your information from our active databases. We may retain some information in our files to prevent fraud, troubleshoot problems, assist with investigations, enforce our legal terms, or comply with legal requirements.

If you have questions or comments about your privacy rights, email us at hello@lightbulb.study.

9. Controls for Do-Not-Track Features

We don't currently respond to browser Do-Not-Track signals.

Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems and applications include a Do-Not-Track ("DNT") feature you can activate to signal that you don't want your online activity monitored and collected. No uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals currently exists, so we don't currently respond to DNT signals or similar mechanisms. If a standard we're required to follow is adopted in the future, we'll inform you in a revised version of this Privacy Notice.

10. Do We Make Updates to This Notice?

We'll update this policy as needed to stay compliant with relevant laws.

We may update this Privacy Notice from time to time. The updated version will be indicated by an updated "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. If we make material changes, we'll notify you by prominently posting a notice or sending you a direct notification. We encourage you to review this notice periodically.

11. How Can You Review, Update, or Delete the Data We Collect From You?

Submit a data subject access request to exercise your rights.

Depending on the applicable laws of your country, you may have the right to request access to the personal information we collect from you, details about how we've processed it, correct inaccuracies, or delete your personal information. You may also have the right to withdraw your consent to our processing. These rights may be limited in some circumstances by applicable law. To request to review, update, or delete your personal information, please fill out and submit a data subject access request.
